
The castle ruins with the pilgrimage place of Kronburg
In 1380 Johann von Starkenberg got the permission to erect a castle.
In 1423 the Starkenberg dynasty took part in an uprising against sovereign Friedrich IV. The uprising was suppressed and Kronburg castle was taken from the Starkenberg dynasty.
In 1504 sovereign Maximilian I enfeoffed the castle to the Fieger dynstay. They rebuilt the castle and added outer defences. In 1802 the Fieger dynasty died out. From 1766 onwards the castle was not lived in and let go to ruin.
In 1985 an association was founded to save Kronburg castle. The castle was restored. Below the castle is Kronburg pilgrimage church with Gasthof Kronburg.
Kronburg pilgrimage place can be reached on a good road (3km) via Schönwies. You can also get there by foot from Rifenal (1/2-hour walk). From the pilgrimage place a steep path leads to the castle ruins, walking time: approx. 15 minutes.
Within the scope of the Castle Card a guided tour of the castle ruins is offered every Wednesday at 2.00 p.m. from June to September.
