Impressive building – Schloss Wiesberg castle near Tobadill
The castle was probably built by the Chur convent in the 13th century.
At the end of the 14th century the castle was owned by the mighty Rottenberger dynasty as a fief of the Dukes of Tirol. The Rottenburger’s main castle was located above Rotholz in the Unterinntal valley. Ever since this dynasty's dying out in 1411, Wiesberg castle has been owned by the sovereigns. It was pawned several times. The last time to the Dukes of Wolkenstein in 1770, who owned it to 1840.
In 1809 a wild battle between the Bavarian troops and several hundred of local “Schützen” defence corps took place near the castle.
The majestic keep that has been built into the up to 2.7m-thick wall was raised in 1908 and covered with a pyramid roof. A wing dating back to the 15th century connects it with a small square hall, the southern wall of which forms an oriel. In the north-western part is a late-Gothic chapel that was built in 1420 and newly consecrated in 1602. It contains roof frescos and glass windows of the early 20th century.
Schloss Wiesberg castle is a private property and can only be visited from the outside.
