The castle ruins are located on a ledge from where one enjoys a fantastic view. The castle’s name dates back to the Schrofensteiner dynasty, who also built the parish church of Landeck. Already in the late 12th century Schrofenstein castle was occupied. In 1196 Friedrich of Schorfenstein is mentioned as ministry official of the bishop of Chur. In 1898 the castle was a fiefdom of the bishops of Chur. When the country was parcelled out between the counts of Tirol and Hirschberg, the castle was legal court from 1254 to 1282. Since 1946 the castle ruins have been privately owned and can only be visited from the outside. Schrofenstein castle ruins are a ½-hour walk from Stanz.
