Stanz – the sunny village
Stanz was first chartered around 1150. In the rocks north-east of Stanz one can recognize the tower of former Burg Schrofenstein castle. In the middle of the 13th century the castle was also the place of jurisdiction.
The most famous building of Stanz is the birth house of the Baroque builder Jakob Prandtauer.
The architecture of old and new houses and the dreamlike gardens create a romantic atmosphere to dwell on.
The mild climate of the mountain slopes ensures that delicious fruit grows here. The ”Stanz plum”, who helped the region to win the title “Culinary Region of Austria”, also grows here.
With its 64 distilleries in 150 households Stanz was awarded being the top distilling village of Austria . On a guided tour through a distillery one can watch from close-by how schnapps is made and of course also taste it.
